The Islamic University of Gaza ( IUG ; Arabic الجامعة الإسلامية بغزة al-Jami'a al-Islamiyya bi-Ghazza , DMG al-Ǧāmiʿa al-Islāmīya bi-Ġazza ) is the largest university in the Palestinian Territories .

history

The Islamic University was founded in 1978 under the significant influence of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza City and was the first higher education institution in the Gaza Strip . It offers the faculties of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, education, economics, Islamic law and religion. The university is headed by President Adel M. Awadallah, who is controlled by a supervisory body.

The IUG is shaped by Islam; almost half of the compulsory courses are religious instruction. The 12,000 female and 8,000 female students study separately according to Islamic regulations.

Important Palestinian politicians at Hamas are graduates or professors of the IUG, among others. a. Ismail Haniyya .

In addition to the IUG, there are the secular al-Azhar University in Gaza , the al-Aqsa University in Gaza, the University of Palestine and branches of the Al-Quds Open University .

On the night of December 28-29, 2008, Israeli planes bombed the university and an adjoining guest house as part of their Operation Cast Lead . Israel justifies this with the fact that weapons for Hamas are manufactured here. The university had already been evacuated. However, the Goldstone report could not find any information for any military use of the buildings.
