Islay is the largest island in the William Scoresby Archipelago, off the Mawson coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . It is located 2.5 km north of Bertha Island .
The island was discovered and named in February 1936 by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations on board the research vessel RRS William Scoresby . It is named after the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland .
