The William Scoresby Archipelago comprises a group of islands off the Mawson coast of the East Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . These extend east of William Scoresby Bay over a length of 22 km. The main islands of the archipelago are the Klakkane Archipelago , the Warnock Islands , Couling Island , the Sheehan Islands , Islay , Bertha Island , Hum Island , Dales Island and Farrington Island .
Most of these islands were discovered in February 1936 by scientists from the British Discovery Investigations aboard the research vessel RRS William Scoresby . The archipelago was named after the name of this ship, which was named after the British navigator and Arctic explorer William Scoresby (1789-1857).
