description

Isle Castle was built in 1674 by Patrick Houston and his wife Margaret Gordon . This makes it one of the very late-built tower houses and for this reason is also of architectural historical interest. It is in the center of the seaside village of Isle of Whithorn. The defense tower was redesigned in the middle of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The structure has an L-shaped floor plan with side lengths of 9.8 m and 9.0 m respectively. With these dimensions, the three-story Isle Castle is relatively small. The masonry is made of quarry stone . In the meantime, the facades were plastered with Harl . However, this was removed again to restore the original character. The entrance portal is located on the stair tower in the inner corner of the building, which was added in the 18th century. Above it, the initials of the builder and the year of construction are immortalized in a plaque.

Twelve-part lattice windows are installed along the two-axis south facade . At the building edges collar two bay from. The final gable roof is covered with slate . One gable is made as a stepped gable . A flat extension was added later.
