Isle of Whithorn ( Gaelic : Port Rosnait ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or the traditional county of Wigtownshire . It is located on a bay in the Irish Sea near the southern tip of the Machars peninsula . Isle of Whithorn is one of the southernmost towns in Scotland.

history

The Isle of Whithorn's story may be linked to the landing of the missionary Ninian . It is possible that he established an early Christian site there in the 4th century, presumably only after the founding of Whithorn Priory . St Ninian's Chapel , which dates back to the 13th century and is now in ruins, could be a successor building. During the Viking Age in Scotland, there was a Nordic settlement not far from the village.

With Isle Castle , the village received a tower house in 1674 . As the name suggests, the Isle of Whithorn was once an island just off the coast. This was initially connected to the mainland by a dam. In the course of the construction of the port in the 18th century, it was permanently connected to the mainland.

In 1831 there were 697 inhabitants in Isle of Whithorn, the number fell to 222 in the 1971 census.

traffic

Isle of Whithorn is connected to the road network via the B7004 and B7063 secondary roads. They lead to the A746 and A747 A-roads , which open up the Machars peninsula and mainly lead traffic to the north-running A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ).
