Alfred Winsloe

Sir Alfred Leigh Winsloe KCB , CVO , CMG (* 1852 in Pitminster , Somerset , England , † February 16, 1931 in Biarritz , Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques , France ) was a British admiral in the Royal Navy , who was in command from 1910 to 1913 of the naval units in China ( China Station ).

Life

Winsloe, the second oldest of five children of Richard Winsloe and his wife Maria Louisa Jack, completed an officer training with the Royal Navy after attending school. On October 1, 1874 his promotion took place on Lieutenant ( Lieutenant ) and on 30 June 1885 Commander ( Commander ). On June 30, 1892 he was appointed Captain ( Captain transported). He was in command of the Cruiser Squadron from 1900 to 1902 and during this time also in command of the Royal Yacht RMS Ophir during the world tour of the Duke of York , George Frederick Ernest Albert and his wife Mary from March to October 1901. For his services as On November 9, 1901, he became the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in command of the RMS Ophir during the voyage . This was followed in succession to Captain Francis Bridgeman between 12 August 1903 and his replacement by Captain Charles Windham on 26 November 1904 to be used as naval aide-de-camp of King Edward VII.

After his promotion to rear admiral on November 26, 1904, he was from 1904 to 1906 commodore of the torpedo and submarine flotillas ( Torpedo and Submarine Craft Flotillas ).

In 1907 he succeeded Captain Frederick Inglefield as the fourth sea lord of the Admiralty ( Fourth Sea Lord ) and was thus responsible for food, supplies, transport and medical care for the Navy. He held this office until his replacement by Rear Admiral Charles Madden in 1910. By a letters patent dated February 11, 1907, he became the fourth sea lord and a member of the commission of Lord High Admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty Edward Marjoribanks, 2nd Baron Tweedmouth , who in addition to him was also Admiral John Arbuthnot Fisher (First Sea Lord), Vice Admiral Charles Carter Drury (Second Sea Lord), Rear Admiral Henry Bradwardine Jackson (Third Sea Lord) and George Lambert (Civil Lord of the Admiralty).

During this time he was on November 5, 1908 and to Vice Admiral ( Vice Admiral promoted). On June 25, 1909, Winsloe was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir". In 1910 he succeeded Vice Admiral Hedworth Meux as the commander of the naval units in China ( China Station ) and remained in this post until he was replaced by Vice Admiral Martyn Jerram in 1913. In this role he was finally promoted to admiral on September 20, 1912 .

On December 13, 1913, Winsloe finally retired and was put on the Retired List . Most recently he lived at 23 Downstreet, Piccadilly, London.
