The Isle aux Herbes (German: "herb island "), also Coffee Island , is an island up to four kilometers long and a maximum of 500 meters wide in the north-south direction in the Gulf of Mexico or the Mississippi Sound off the coast of the US state of Alabama .
The island is less than two kilometers from the Gulf coast and the town of Bayou La Batre . Depending on the wind direction, wind strength and height of the tidal range , it can lie completely under water. Hardly more than two weeks before the arrival of the oil spill caused by the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon platform , attempts were made in April 2010 to counter the progressive erosion through sand heaps and other measures that were primarily intended to protect the coast .
