Ismail Erel

Ismail Erel (born September 15, 1971 in Bursa , Turkey ) is a German-Turkish investigative journalist. Since September 2017, he has been Germany's head of the Turkish government newspaper Sabah, which is close to Erdoğan .

Life

Youth and Studies

Ismail Erel came to Germany as a toddler and grew up in Sinzig (Rhineland-Palatinate). After graduating from high school, Erel studied German at Selçuk University in Konya . There he translated reports from German newspapers for a regional Turkish newspaper in his spare time.

After completing his studies, Erel worked as a freelance journalist for a short time. Between 1995 and 1996 he worked as a volunteer for the European edition of the Turkish daily Zaman . In 1996 he switched to the daily newspaper SABAH, where he worked as a chief reporter until the end of 1999. At the end of 1999 Ismail Erel went to Hürriyet , the Turkish newspaper with the highest circulation in Europe at the time. Until the end of 2008, Erel was the editorial manager of Hürriyet. Between 2008 and the end of 2014 he worked as Deputy SABAH Editor-in-Chief.

In addition to interviews about a Turkish double agent, reports on the Turkish donation scandal and the Ceska series of murders , Erel wrote mainly about topics in Germany. He wrote about the serial murders until they were discovered.

Erel had also uncovered the "Turkish ban" in Rastatt schools.

Erel wrote the story about the civil courage victim Tuğçe Albayrak for the Bild newspaper . Later Erel wrote the book "Tuğçe-Ein Schicksal wird Deutschland" (A fate moves Germany). The book tells from the perspective of mother Tuğçe's life and the last days in the hospital. Kai Diekmann wrote the foreword to the book .

With his lawsuit before the Federal Constitutional Court , Erel achieved a new version of the accreditation procedure in the NSU process . In the first trial, all the Turkish media went empty-handed. After his newspaper Sabah also went empty-handed, Erel and the publisher were brought before the Federal Constitutional Court and won the vote.

Awards

Erel was voted “Journalist of the Year” in 2019 by the European Union of Turkish Journalists.
