The Isola del Garda (German Gardainsel ) or Isola di Garda is the largest island in Lake Garda .

geography

The island is a few hundred meters from Cap San Fermo, which closes the Gulf of San Felice del Benaco, between Salò and San Felice del Benaco .

It reaches a height of 88 meters. That is 23 meters above the lake level. According to the 2001 census, the island had 10 residents.

history

For the Romans, the island was a locus deliciarum (Latin: place of entertainment ), with country houses and temples, as can be seen from inscriptions and remains.

In the 8th century it was owned by the County of Garda, from which it gets its name. In 879 she came to the monastery of San Zenon of Verona with Carlomanno . Francis of Assisi acquired part of the island and founded a hermitage in 1221. The island was now called "Island of the Monks". These monks brought some plant cultures to the lake, including lemons.

Bernardine of Siena stayed here in 1442 and converted the hermitage into a monastery. Francesco Lechi, known as Licheto, made the monastery known in the 16th century as a study center for theological studies. In 1798 the monastery was closed and in 1817 the patriotic Count Luigi Lechi converted it into a villa. In 1860 the island came to the Italian government, which in turn sold it to Baron Scotti. After various changes of ownership, it finally came to the Borghese family . Prince Scipio converted the former villa into a palace in the Venetian style (1894–1901), which can still be seen today. The architect was Luigi Rovelli .

Today the island is owned by the Count Cavazza family, who also have their residence there. From April to October there are guided tours on the island, also in connection with concerts.
