An isolani can have both advantages and disadvantages for the owner.

A centrally placed Isolani often provides a space advantage that can be used in the middle game for an attack on the king. Furthermore, if an Isolani is not blocked adequately, it can become a dangerous passed pawn . Siegbert Tarrasch was the advocate of Isolani . He wrote the following statement: "If you are afraid of playing with an isolated pawn, you should stop playing chess."

If, on the other hand, the Isolani is attacked, he must be defended by figures of higher value. These can get into a passive position or be absent elsewhere. In addition, the space immediately in front of him often serves as a base for opposing pieces to block , as they can no longer be attacked by pawns there. In such a situation, the opposing party tries to block Isolani first, then move on to the endgame by exchanging minor pieces, where Isolani becomes weak without compensating factors. The transition to a position with hanging pawns occurs. Allowing a farmer to be isolated can therefore be a strategic disadvantage. Grandmaster Savielly Tartakower therefore coined the phrase “ An Isolani darkens the mood on the whole chessboard .” He called the Isolani a “pawn without friends”.

The white Isolani on the d4 square and the black Isolani on d5 are frequent and therefore well researched. Wilhelm Steinitz carried out the first relevant investigations . A typical position with white Isolani on the d4 square can be found in the game Botwinnik - Milan Vidmar (Nottingham 1936); see diagram. The Isolani on d4 controls the squares c5 and e5, which White can use as bases for his pieces.
