Blockade (chess)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The blockade is a strategic motif in the game of chess . The purpose of the blockade is to prevent opposing pawns from advancing further. This is best done with a minor figure , as it cannot be attacked as effectively as a rook, queen or king because of its low value. It is particularly important to block opposing passed pawns trying to convert .

A blockade is particularly effective on half-open lines because there is no own farmer to take over the blockade function. Preventing the pawn move automatically limits the effectiveness of some opposing pieces because they cannot develop at will.

The field immediately in front of the blocked pawn is called the blocking field . The jumper in the middle of the board is particularly suitable as a blockade figure, and the rook on the edge . The least suitable blockade figure is the queen , as this can easily be driven away by opposing pieces and should take on much more important tasks than stopping a pawn.

Blockade of the passed pawn on d5

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

The example diagram from the opening phase of a game Jezek - Uhlmann shows an effective blockade of the covered white passed pawn d5 by the knight on d6 . It neutralizes this passed pawn for a long time. The knight also influences the central points e4 and c4 , which must be covered by White and, if necessary, supports the advances b7 – b5 or f7 – f5 attacking the white center.
