Israa Gharib (* 1998 ; † August 22, 2019 in Bait Sahur ) was a Palestinian beautician who was the victim of a so-called honor killing .

Life

Israa Gharib lived in Bait Sahur in the West Bank . When she posted videos on social media of her going out with her fiancé, her male relatives were so angry about the premarital contact that they beat her up. While fleeing from the men, Gharib fell out of the window and succumbed to her injuries two weeks later. The relatives explained the lintel to the authorities by saying that the woman was " possessed ". However, the official investigation found that she had died of severe respiratory failure as a result of the beatings. Palestinian Attorney General Akram al-Khatib announced that three of the relatives had been arrested. She was charged with murder. Demonstrators demanded that the Palestinian government not only punish the perpetrators, but also pass a law against domestic violence that was introduced 15 years ago . According to the Palestinian Police, 12% of homicides in the West Bank are so-called honor killings. The Women's Center for Legal Aid and Counseling, a Palestinian women's rights organization, said there had been 29 honor killings of women in the West Bank in 2018 and 19 by August 2019.
