Israel Cantor

Israel Kantor , actually Wilfredo Israel Sardiñas (born October 16, 1949 in Alturas de Canasí , Cuba , † July 1, 2006 in Miami , Florida) was a musician and singer from Cuba.

Life

At the age of eight, Kantor was a professional musician together with his father and uncle in the group "Septeto". He learned guitar and percussion from his mother. In 1970 he managed to be accepted into the renowned music school "Escuela de Musica Moderna". In 1973 he became a member of the band "Columna Juvenil", which toured constantly through Cuba. In 1977 he became the lead singer in the group "Neoson". A year later he switched to the band "Los Yakos", which is known in Cuba. In 1981 he made the leap into one of the internationally best known Cuban groups, " Los Van Van ". When he traveled to Mexico with the band for the third time in 1983, he decided not to travel back to Cuba. In 1984 he called himself Israel Kantor in New York.

In Mexico he recorded his first album, Fuera de Cuba , and la Verdad a year later . He moved to Miami, became a member of the group "Latin Salsa" and sang some well-known hits such as Paso la Vida Pensando , Maria Antonieta , Seré , Sin Coger Lucha , Sandunguera , A la Mitad del Camino , Miami at Night and others. He later built his own band "Havana Son".

In Miami in 2003 he joined the “Tropicana All Stars Orchestra”, which has been nominated for the Grammy Music Award several times .

Israel Kantor died of cancer in his Miami home in 2006.
