Ptitim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ptitim , better known as Israeli couscous

Ptitim ( פתיתים; German: 'flakes'), also Israeli couscous , is an Israeli , lightly roasted , rice - or spherical type of noodle .

history

The food company Osem (אסם) claims to have invented Ptitim as a substitute for rice and couscous in the 1950s during a great depression and food shortage. A similar food already existed in North Africa as Berkukes and in Lebanon as Moghrabieh or Maftoul . Ptitim is made from wheat , like couscous and pasta , but is hot-dried, which gives it a slightly nutty taste.
