Szijártó graduated with a Masters in International Relations in 1989 and another in History a year later. In 1998 he received his doctorate in history from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in the following year he accepted a position as assistant professor in the Department of Medieval and Early Modern History at Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest . In 2004 he became a research assistant at the Institute for Habsburg History in Budapest. From 2005 to 2009 he was an assistant professor and then a lecturer at the Department of Economic and Social History at Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest. In 2007 he completed his habilitation in history at the same university in Budapest. In the same year he founded the " Microhistory Network ".

István Szijártó is married with 4 children and lives in Piliscsaba, outside of Budapest.

Theory and effect

Szijártó defines microhistory in terms of three central points: First, microhistory is a historical investigation of a limited object or a single case. Second, microhistorians should always seek answers to the "big historical questions". And thirdly, according to Szijártó, the people involved in the investigated cases are not viewed by microhistorians as passive puppets under the power of supra-personal structures or discourses, but as active individuals with their own "agency". For Szijártó, these three points merge closely.

His book What is Microhistory ? , co-authored with Sigurður Gylfi Magnússon . Theory and Practice shows the enormous breadth of micro-history. Szijárto and Magnússon explain that microhistory is based on anthropology and want to look at the relationship between the two disciplines. The criticism of microanalysis lies in the question of whether the "great historical questions" can really be answered by bringing unknown worlds closer. The book summarizes the most important developments in micro-historical thinking and specifies the similarities between various works and tendencies. On the other hand, the work also points to the fundamental differences between various micro-historical schools - and not least between Szijárto and Magnússon themselves. Since the two authors come from different cultural and theoretical contexts, two differing views on the nature of microhistory are represented in the book. According to Tamás Kisantal , however, this enables the authors to cover almost the entire spectrum of micro-history.

According to Kisantal, Szijártó tries in his work What Is Microhistory? Theory and Practice to (re-) establish microhistory in historical studies. Kisantal sees Szijartó's contribution as an attempt to reconcile socio-historical microhistory with postmodern positions by emphasizing linguistic and poetic aspects of microhistory.

In a review of work A 18. századi Magyarország rendi országgyűlése (The feudal parliament of eighteenth-century Hungary) by Szijártó, Fanni Hende emphasizes that the author has a broad methodological and theoretical knowledge and the works of various researchers in his text receive.
