Istvaeonen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Istvaeonen (also Istväonen , Istwäonen , Istwaier , Istrionen , Istaevonen , Latin Istvaenoes , Istaevones ) are a group of Germanic tribes named after their eponymous progenitor Istævo .

Tacitus passed on the legend of the Germanic god Tuisto in his Germania . His son is Mannus , origin and founder of the Germanic family. Three sons are ascribed to Mannus, after whose names the Ingaevones closest to the sea , the middle Herminones (ie living in the interior) and the Istaevones living on the Rhine were named. In addition, the term is still handed down by Pliny .

Of the three traditional Mannus tribes, the Istaevones are the most difficult to classify geographically and historically. The founder of Celtology, Johann Kaspar Zeuss , traces the name of the Istaevonen back to the Gothic / Vandal family of the Azdingi , which Jakob Grimm thinks linked to Hazdiggo (Haddingr).
