history

The first volume, “From the Beginnings to the French Revolution”, was published by Deutsches Taschenbuchverlag in September 1964 , followed two years later by the second volume, which deals with the story “From the French to the Present”. The parts are currently in their 40th and 41st edition and continue the work with historical events until 2008 (as of January 2014). A 42nd edition of the second volume with additions to 2011 is in preparation. At times the atlas was also published as a one-volume work under the title “dtv-Atlas Weltgeschichte. From the beginning to the present ”. The 3rd edition from September 2006 covered the history of the present up to 2005.

After the death of Herrmann Kinder, Werner Hilgemann continued to revise and add to it from the 12th edition. For the revision of the years from 1965 and expansion up to 1990 for the 25th edition, he received support from Wolfgang Pöppinghaus . In the years that followed, Manfred Hergt initially took over the extensions for the period from 1990 and, after many years of collaboration until the death of Werner Hilgemann, from 2004, finally, overall responsibility for the 39th and all later editions of the work. Harald and Ruth Bukor , and in the more recent editions also Werner Wildermuth , are responsible for the graphic design of the images and maps.
