It's a Hard Life is a song by the British rock band Queen , written by Freddie Mercury and appeared on their 1984 album The Works . It was the third single on the album and reached 6th place in the UK singles chart and 2nd place in the Irish music charts . It also appeared on several live and compilation albums .

The song is about the difficulties of maintaining a relationship and having the partner's trust.

The first bars quote the end of the aria Vesti la giubba from the opera Pagliacci (1892) by the composer Ruggero Leoncavallo .

Music video

The music video was shot in Munich, where Freddie Mercury also recorded his own solo album. In the video you can see the four band members together with other extras at a ball , at which everyone present is dressed as in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Robin Beers and Richard Watkinson painted the backdrop. The filming cost was over £ 120,000 .

Roger Taylor said in the comments on Greatest Video Hits 2 that he thought the song was one of the best Mercury wrote, but hated the music video and the fact that he was on the music video.
