It Takes a Thief is the debut album by the US - rapper Coolio . The album was mainly due to the single Fantastic Voyage successes to celebrate.

History of origin

Coolio left the group " WC & The Maad Circle" because he played a rather insignificant role in the background. At that time, the formation was tied to Priority Records because of an existing record deal . However, since Coolio had not signed a contract with them, he was able to work on his solo album with WC .

For the topics of unemployment, drugs, violence and homelessness, productions were used that are mostly reminiscent of the funk, jazz & soul of the 70s, but also of the old-school hip-hop.

successes

The album went platinum in the United States. It reached number 8 on the Billboard charts. In Germany, however, the album went relatively unnoticed and did not reach the top 100.

Single releases

Fantastic voyage

The single Fantastic Voyage (German. "Fantastic journey ") is still one of Coolio's most successful singles. The song is about just sitting back and going on a fantastic journey. It is precisely because of this song that Coolio is often referred to as one of the representatives of G-Funk . In 1994 the single was nominated for the MTV Video Music Award for the best rapeseed solo song and in 1995 the Grammy Award also for the best rapeseed solo song, which he did not win either. The song contains the text line "There ain't no blood, there ain't no crippin ', ain't no punk ass niggas set trippin ... and it really don't matter if you're white or black." a clear rejection of gangsta rap , which Coolio still celebrates on the record.

The single was a great success in the USA. It reached # 2 on Hot Rap Singles and went platinum. In Germany the single reached number 91 in the charts.

County Line

The song criticizes the welfare system in the USA. County Line ranked # 26 on Hot Dance Music / Maxi Singles Sales and # 27 on Hot Rap Singles.

Mama I'm in Love with a Gangsta

The song Mama I'm in Love with a Gangsta is about a woman who loves a man who is apparently a criminal. The song was also released as a single, but only reached number 49 of the hot rap singles.

It takes a thief

The theme song was also released and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

I remember

The song I Remember is about the "good old days". Coolio and two other rappers talk about what they experienced as children. I Remember reached # 83 on the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and # 48 on the Hot Rap Singles.

criticism

“As dark as the topics of unemployment, homelessness, violence and drugs are, COOLIO describes them with some humor (in the first person) and great hip-hop. Musical references to the 70s soul, funk and jazz groove up to old school, COOLIO works it into easy swing beats and funky bass and guitar runs. "
