description

Venetian balaclava

The Italian balaclava is usually made of steel . In the 16th century , gunsmiths and armaments smiths in Italy began to decorate the weapons and armor they produced in a particularly artistic way. The shapes of the balaclavas changed their shape and, with their curved neck pieces, became similar to the ancient Roman helmets. At the smiths in Milan , Florence , Bologna and Rome , helmets of this type became real luxury items through driving , tawing and gilding . The blacksmiths in Germany, especially in Nuremberg , also made high-quality decorated balaclavas. These helmets were intended almost exclusively for high-ranking customers and were used more for parades and public life. The usual simple balaclavas remained in use for combat.
