Itchō Itō

Itchō Itō ( Japanese 伊藤 一 長 , Itō Itchō ; born August 23, 1945 in Nagato , Yamaguchi Prefecture ; † April 18, 2007 in Nagasaki ) was a Japanese politician and mayor of Nagasaki from 1995 until his death.

On April 17, 2007, Ito was gunned down by Tetsuya Shiroo , a member of the yakuza group Yamaguchi-gumi , after a campaign rally . Ito was taken to the Medical and Dental Faculty Hospital of Nagasaki University , where he died on the morning of April 18 as a result of excessive blood loss.

Itō was the second mayor of Nagasaki to be assassinated. As early as 1990, the then mayor Hitoshi Motoshima was gunned down.

Itō, who was close to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party , had become known internationally as a staunch opponent of nuclear weapons during his tenure. He also criticized the memory of war criminals in the Yasukuni shrine .

His real name was Kazunaga Itō , the Kun reading of the characters used, while he used the On reading Itchō Itō for his political life .
