history

The first written mention of the property can be found in the 14th century. House Itlingen originally belonged to the Lords of Herbern , who probably lived there as early as 1300. By marrying it in 1540 it came into the hands of the Westphalian nobility von Nagel , who own it to this day. Ferdinand von Nagel had today's castle built around 1680. In the 18th century it was rebuilt in the Baroque style by the architect Johann Conrad Schlaun and was given its horseshoe shape (a central building with two wings), on the outer flanks of which round towers form the end.

The castle estate is still owned by the family, namely by Hermann Freiherr von Nagel. The father of the current owner was the famous international show jumper Hermann Freiherr von Nagel, who won many national prizes with his horse Wotan before the Second World War . The riding and driving club in Herbern is named after the famous rider. In 1954, the entrepreneur Carl Fastenrath leased the castle estate and built the Quenhorn stud there , which made a name for itself primarily as a pension stud for other breeders. Among other things, the good Derby winners Tarim and Zank as well as the Tarim daughter Britannia , mother of the famous Borgia and ancestor of the very successful Ammerland stud , grew up there . In 1999, the experienced stud manager Philipp Graf Stauffenberg took over the lease together with his wife and since then has been running one of the most famous thoroughbred agencies in the country as well as their own very international breeding there under the name Stauffenberg Bloodstock .
