Ivan Štraus

Ivan Štraus (born June 24, 1928 in Kremna , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † August 25, 2018 in Sarajevo ) was a Bosnian architect . He was one of the most important architects of Yugoslavia in the period after the Second World War.

When he was four years old, he moved to Banja Luka with his parents because his father was transferred there. After Ivan's father died in Zagreb at the age of eight, he was adopted by his uncle and took his surname Štraus.

Štraus began to study architecture in Zagreb in 1947 and graduated from the Technical University of Sarajevo in 1958 . Then worked as an assistant at the Technical University of Sarajevo. 1959–1961 and again 1965–1984 he worked for the magazine “Arhitekt”. In the 1980s he became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia-Herzegovina .

Štraus built at home and abroad. Well-known buildings in Sarajevo include the “Holiday Inn” hotel (1983), the UNIS towers (1986), the “Elektroprivreda BiH” office building (1978) and the Belgrade Aviation Museum .
