Ivo Mogiļnijs (born August 29, 1968 in Riga ) is an officer in the Latvian Army with the rank of major general . He is currently Latvia's military representative to NATO and the EU .

Life

Ivo Mogiļnijs was born in 1968 in Riga, the capital of what was then the Latvian SSR .

Military career

After graduating from school in 1985, Mogiļnijs attended a Soviet military academy until 1989. In 1992, when Latvia regained its independence, he joined the armed forces in his home country, which were being rebuilt. After attending a staff officer course at the Dutch Military Academy in 2000, he served at the Latvian Armed Forces Headquarters from 2002 . In the meantime he attended a general staff course in Germany from 2005 to 2007 and served in 2011 with the Latvian ISAF contingent in Afghanistan . From 2012 to 2016 he worked as a defense attaché in the USA and Canada .

In April 2016, Mogiļnijs was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Latvian Armed Forces. On June 20, 2016, he was promoted to Brigadier General. After the interim appointment as chief of staff on February 14, 2017, he was promoted to major general on November 7, 2018. In June 2019 he was replaced by Imants Ziediņš on the post of Chief of Staff.

In addition to his mother tongue, the general also speaks German, English and Russian.
