Izabella Mônica Vieira Teixeira (born October 9, 1961 in Brasília ) is a Brazilian politician . Since April 1, 2010, she was the successor to Carlos Minc Baumfeld as Brazilian Environment Minister under Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and then Dilma Rousseff until she was replaced by José Sarney Filho in the Temer cabinet . Before her appointment as minister, she was State Secretary in the same position .

Teixeira studied biology at the University of Brasília ; she earned a master's degree in energy planning and a doctorate in environmental planning from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . On September 24, 2012, she was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to participate in the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda .

When asked about the deforestation in the Brazilian jungle, whether it was not necessary to enforce the laws with more police officers, she replied with "Yes". But it is not possible to get hold of all lawbreakers. In November 2012, it announced that the decline in Amazon rainforest in Brazil had fallen to its lowest level since 1988.

In 2013 she received the Champions of Earth Award .

At the beginning of her ministerial tenure, she was criticized for high travel costs.
