José Sarney Filho , known as Zequinha Sarney , (born June 14, 1957 in São Luís , Maranhão ) is a Brazilian lawyer and politician . Since May 12, 2016, he has succeeded Izabella Teixeira as the Brazilian Environment Minister under Michel Temer . From January 1, 1999 to March 5, 2002, he held the post of Environment Minister under the government of Fernando Henrique Cardoso .

Life

José Sarney Filho is the son of José Sarney and Marly Sarney . The family is closely linked to politics. His father was President of the Republic between 1985 and 1990. He is also the brother of former Maranhão Governor Roseana Sarney and entrepreneur Fernando Sarney .

Sarney Filho is a party changer: from 1970 to 1980 he was a member of the Aliança Renovadora Nacional (ARENA), from 1980 to 1985 of the Partido Democrático Social (PDS), from 1985 to 2005 of the Partido da Frente Libera (PFL) and since 2005 of the Partido Verde (PV). His political career began in 1970 at the ARENA, for which he became a member of the State of Maranhão in 1978. After moving to the PDS, he obtained his first mandate as a federal representative for his home state in 1978 and was re-elected for this in 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002. Fernando Henrique Cardoso appointed him to his second cabinet as Environment Minister in 1999, until he was replaced by José Carlos Carvalho in 2002 .

He was also able to prevail in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 elections with a sufficient 2.93% of the vote, this time for the Green Party, of which he was vice-president, and represented the state of Maranhão for a total of 33 years until he was reappointed in 2016 as Environment Minister. His tenure as Environment Minister ended on April 6, 2018, when he was replaced by Edson Duarte , also a member of the Green Party and its current Vice President.
