Edson Duarte

Edson Gonçalves Duarte (born November 2, 1965 in Juazeiro , Bahia ) is a Brazilian politician who belongs to the Brazilian Green Party (PV) and has been Environment Minister since April 2018 .

Life

Duarte is the son of José Duarte Neto and Judite Gonçalves de Souza Duarte, born in Juazeiro on the Rio São Francisco in the Sertão Bahias. He studied pedagogy at the Universidade Católica do Salvador (UCSAL), which was followed by postgraduate studies at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV).

His honors include being awarded honorary citizenship of the cities of Itabuna in 2010 and Salvador in 2013.

Political career

Change of party: From 1987 to 1989 Duarte was a member of the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB), from 1992 to 1993 of the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) and has been a member of the Partido Verde (PV), the Brazilian Green Party , since 1993 .

In the local elections in Brazil in 1992 he was elected to the Juazeiro City Council for the PSB from 1993 to 1996. He then went into state politics and became a state representative for the Green Party in the legislative assembly of Bahia from 1996 to 1998 and by re-election from 1999 to 2003. He ran twice for the Chamber of Deputies in the National Congress and represented his home state for the 52nd legislative period from 2003 to 2003 2007 and 53rd legislative period 2007 to 2011 as a federal member.

In 2016 and 2017 he was a member of the National Council for the Environment (CONAMA).

On April 6, 2018, he took over the office of the Ministry of the Environment in the Temer cabinet , succeeding José Sarney Filho . He is also a member of the Green Party's National Executive Commission.

In his opening address to the 2018 meeting of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in Florianópolis , Duarte called for the organization to be converted into a whale protection commission.
