The Legislative Assembly of Bahia , officially Portuguese Assembleia Legislativa da Bahia (ALBA), is the supreme legislative body of the Brazilian state of Bahia .

The headquarters are in the Prédio Luís Eduardo Magalhães in Salvador . The unicameral parliament consists of 63 representatives elected by proportional representation, the deputados estaduais , who are elected for four years, most recently in the parliamentary elections as part of the elections in Brazil in 2018 . Parliament's work is supported by 12 standing commissions.

Nelson Leal of the Progressistas (PP) has been President of Parliament since February 1, 2019 .

    history

On February 28, 1821, the Bahia Province was founded in the Brazilian Empire . A constitutional amendment of the empire of 1834 allowed provincial parliaments ( Assembléias Legislativas Provinciais ) to be formed for the provinces . The first legislative term in the province of Bahia was opened in 1835 with 36 elected deputies, the Deputados Provinciais , in 1852 the number was increased to 42.

The province was held from November 15, 1889, the state of Bahia of the newly proclaimed Republic of Brazil and a constituent legislative assembly for the state constitution. The citizens opted for a bicameral system , as the forerunner of today's legislative assembly, with the Legislative Congress of the State of Bahia ( Congresso Legislativo do Estado da Bahia ) consisting of a Senate, the Senado Estadual , and a Chamber of Deputies, the Câmara Estadual . Parliament was able to continue its work until the 14th legislative term before it was banned by the 1930 coup and the Vargas dictatorship (Decree 19.398 of November 11, 1930). The state had adopted a new constitution in 1935, but it was ineffective. Only with the end of the Estado Novo and a new federal constitution of 1946 could the federal state, after a constituent assembly, adopt a new legislature based on the rule of law, this time as a unicameral system and initially 60 MPs. The seat was the Palacete Machado in Salvador, from 1947 the legislative periods were counted anew.

The military dictatorship resulted in new restrictions for the state parliaments. With the Brazilian constitution of 1988 , the state of Bahia was also able to receive its unicameral parliament, the number of people's representatives was adjusted to the growing population and increased to 63 members.

In 2020, the legislature will be responsible for around 14.9 million people.
