Johannes Caioni

János Kájoni ( Johannes Kajoni , Ioan Caianu , Kájoni János ; born March 8, 1629 in Jegenye , Romanian Leghia ; † April 25, 1687 in Gyergyószárhegy , Romanian Lăzarea ) was a Romanian Franciscan , composer , organ builder and printer.

Kájoni converted from the Orthodox Church to the Roman Catholic in 1648 and joined the Franciscans in 1650 . He later held the post of guardian . 1678 was Pope Innocent XI. appointed Vicar General of Transylvania .

In his organ tablatures he handed down numerous hymns, folk songs and folk dances. The Organo Missale contains masses and litanies , including his own compositions.

Codex Caioni

The Codex Caioni was long considered lost, it was not rediscovered until 1988; monks had walled up the collection when Soviet troops approached towards the end of the Second World War. The codex , which dates back to the 17th century, is a collection of secular and sacred works by contemporary composers from the Italian and German-speaking countries, originally intended for personal use, but also contains popular Romanian and Hungarian music for everyday use.
