The Janisjarwi ( Russian Янисъярви ; Finnish name Jänisjärvi , "Hasensee") is a 200 km² lake in the Republic of Karelia in Russia, north of Lake Ladoga .
The lake is traversed by Jänisjoki and drained to Lake Ladoga to the south. The catchment area of the lake covers 3660 km².
The basin of the approximately circular lake is the result of a meteorite impact 700 ± 5 million years ago (according to other sources 698 ± 22 million years) during the cryogenium .
The impact crater has a diameter of 14 km.
Before the Second World War , it was thought to be the second known volcanic caldera in Finland - the other was Lake Lappajärvi . It later emerged that both lakes had formed in impact craters.
