Jón Þór Ólafsson

Jón Þór Ólafsson (German transcription Jon Thor Olafsson , born March 13, 1977 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician and was chairman of the Icelandic pirate party Píratar from 2013 to 2014 as the successor to Birgitta Jónsdóttir , from whom he was replaced again in this office. From 2013 to 2015 Jón Þór was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing , since 2014 deputy group leader of the Píratar. After his resignation in 2015, he ran again for the early parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2016 and was re-elected to the Althing.

Life

Jón Þór studied philosophy and business administration at the University of Iceland from 2002 to 2013 . Since the Icelandic parliamentary elections on April 27, 2013 , Jón Þór was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing for the constituency of Reykjavík-Süd . He was a member of Parliament's Committee on Environment and Communication and the Special Committee on Parliament's Rules of Procedure. In the summer of 2015, Jón Þór announced his resignation. Ásta Guðrún Helgadóttir took his seat in parliament . When early elections were held in October 2016 , Jón Þór ran again successfully, this time for the Southwestern constituency . He ranks third in the Althing's parliamentary vice-presidency.

In 2013, Jón Þór caused a sensation in parliament by refusing to address parliamentarians using the traditional form of address háttvirtan (“highly respected”, for members of parliament) or hæstvirtur (“ highly respected ”, for ministers). In his opinion, parliamentarians should not automatically address one another with an honorary title that is not necessarily earned. Since the then President of Parliament Einar K. Guðfinnsson did not want to tolerate this behavior and had repeatedly called Jón Þór to order, Jón Þór considered having the relevant powers of the parliamentary president clarified in court.
