József Herman

József Herman (born August 18, 1924 in Budapest ; † October 9, 2005 in Telki , Pest County ) was a Hungarian Romance and Latinist.

life and work

Herman studied in Budapest and Paris. He was professor at the Eötvös Loránd University from 1962 and held the chair for Romance Philology from 1975 to 1994, but also taught as a visiting professor in Paris, Vienna, Göttingen and finally from 1992 to 1999 in Venice. From 1977 to 1987 he was editor of the journal Acta Linguistica Hungarica .

His book on Vulgar Latin , written in French, has been translated into Japanese, Spanish and English.
