Roger Jean Gautheret

Roger Jean Gautheret (born March 29, 1910 in Paris , † April 28, 1997 ibid) was a French botanist and pioneer in the study of in vitro tissue cultures. 1979–1980 he was President of the Académie des Sciences , of which he had been a member since 1958.

Scientific achievement

Gautheret was one of the first scientists who succeeded in cultivating plant cells in vitro. His work was published in January 1939. The research results of White (December 1938) and Nobécourt (February 1939) appeared almost simultaneously. The time for these studies was ripe after Carrel established a method for animal cells in tissue culture in 1912.

Gautheret studied at the Sorbonne and worked in Alexandre Guillermond's laboratory from 1931 . In 1935 he received his doctorate and in 1950 became assistant for botany at the Sorbonne, then maître de conférence for plant biology and professor for cell biology. In 1979 he retired.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1980).
