Jörg Asmus (born February 20, 1966 in Havelberg ) is a German expert on birds with a focus on parrot birds . In preparation for the conservation breeding projects he initiated or accompanied , he studied the phenotypic characteristic variations and the delimitation of the respective bird groups, especially parrots, and published them on them. He mainly publishes his specialist articles in journals such as the Feathered World or Parrots . Asmus received an award for his work in this area.

Life

Since adolescence he has been interested in ornithology , nature conservation and nature photography . Asmus has been involved in private bird keeping since 1979, with the main focus on species conservation. From 2006 to 2014 he was a member of the executive committee of the Association for the Breeding and Conservation of Native and Foreign Birds eV (VZE) , where he was responsible for conservation breeding projects and worked as a species protection officer. In 2014 Asmus was actively involved in the founding of the Society for Species Conservation Bird Breeding (GAV) eV and has since been a member of the executive committee and coordinator for species protection projects. He is a commissioner for the IUCN SSC Bird Red List Authority.

Asmus is a co-initiator and founder of the conservation breeding projects

  • 1999: European Conservation Breeding Project for Vasa Parrots ( Coracopsis )
  • 2002: European conservation breeding project for the red-axed parrot ( Psittinus cyanurus )
  • 2008: International breeding project for the star weaver ( Dinemellia dinemelli )
  • 2009: European Conservation Breeding Project for Agapornids (EPPAS)
  • 2014: Monitoring program for the Chinese Parakeet ( Psittacula derbiana )
  • 2015: European conservation breeding project for the Swallow Parakeet ( Lathamus discolor )

Close cooperation takes place in the areas of conservation breeding and species protection with zoological institutions and scientists worldwide.

From the year 2000, Asmus repeatedly conducted his systematic and taxonomic investigations into various ornithological collections in Germany and abroad. His examination of population characteristics by comparing specimens and living birds shows how interdisciplinary research promotes bird protection and what role natural history collections can play in this. Asmus was awarded the Maria Koepcke Prize of the German Ornithological Society in 2015 for his work in this field .

In 2005 his first bird book appeared in Germany with the title "On the investigation of some museum specimens of the small vase parrot ( Coracopsis nigra ) for their subspecies", which was also published in English. One of the later book publications on Australian parakeets was published by a Czech publisher. Many of the more than 350 specialist articles have also been published in other European countries.

In 2006 Asmus succeeded in first breeding the brown-headed parrot ( Poicephalus cryptoxanthus ). From 2006 to 2014 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of VZE.
