Jörg Schneider (civil rights activist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Schneider (* 1967 in Plauen ) is a German politician and Plauen actor in the 1989 revolution in the GDR .

Political activity

Jörg Schneider had already developed his internal opposition to the SED state during his apprenticeship as a toolmaker . This increased during his time in the basic military service of the NVA. Schneider used his talent for writing and wrote a satirical brigade newspaper "Der Werkstattkurier" with like-minded colleagues . Calls for a protest that were written earlier and distributed to the public still failed because the desired response did not materialize.

Jörg Schneider wrote about 200 copies of his call for a typewriter, "Come to the demonstration on October 7th!" And distributed it with some friends on the night of October 3rd, 1989 Unprecedented event triggered.

He was one of the comparatively few people who, in the run-up to the historic events in autumn 1989, tried to convince the masses to openly express their dissatisfaction with grievances and injustice in the state, to overcome their fears, to take to the streets and for reforms to enter.

Consciously and deliberately, he chose the 40th anniversary of the GDR as the date for the demonstration. As a result, it was very difficult for the state to distinguish which citizens flocked to the official state celebrations and which to protest demonstrations in the town center of Plauen. A preventive and targeted intervention for the security organs was therefore not possible. The first peaceful mass demonstration took place in Plauen on October 7, 1989 , before which the state had to capitulate.

Initially an active member in the reform movement Neues Forum Plauen , the 21-year-old Jörg Schneider then actively participated in the SPD that was being founded . In 2004 he resigned from the SPD as a result of the SPD's Agenda 2010 policy . In June 2010 he was co-founder of the Citizens' Platform for Democratic Renewal in Plauen.

On December 6, 1989, he organized a warning strike in his company, which the New Forum Plauen had called for. The various attempts by the SED factory and union management and the local press to prevent this strike were unsuccessful. Presumably this was the only warning strike of its kind in the GDR.
