Jørgen Hansen (rower)
Jørgen Christian Hansen (born August 14, 1890 in Sakskøbing , † September 10, 1953 in Gentofte ) was a Danish rower and Olympic champion.
At the 1912 Olympic regatta held in Djurgårdsbrunnsviken , there were two competitions in a four-man with a helmsman. In today's internationally common boat class, the oarlocks were attached to the boom . In the other boat class, which was common in Scandinavia at the time, the oarlocks were attached directly to the edge of the boat, on the gunwale . The boat class with gunwale attachment was only Olympic in 1912.
Six boats competed in the gunwale class: two boats each came from Sweden and Norway, one from Denmark and only the French boat was not from Scandinavia. Two boats competed against each other in the preliminary run, the Danish boat from Nykøbing Falster Roklub competed against the boat from Gothenburg and won with a lead of one and a half lengths. In the first semifinal, the Swedes from Roddklubben af 1912 from Malmö and Helsingborg won against the Norwegians from Ormsund Roklub , in the second semifinals the Danes rowed to the finish without an opponent. The Swedes not only had a semi-final in the four, but also a quarter-final in the eight behind them when they faced the Danes for the final. There the Danes won by twelve seconds.
Ejler Allert and Hansen were several Danish champions in the four. The trained lathe operator later worked as a blacksmith in a sugar factory in Nykøbing Falster .
