Caetano António Cláudio Júlio Raymundo da Gama Pinto (born April 30, 1853 in Saligão , Goa , † 1945 ) was a Portuguese ophthalmologist.

Career

Gama Pinto was born in the Portuguese colony of Goa. His father Francisco Salvador Pinto was president of the Câmara Municipal of Bardez . In 1872 he came to Portugal to study medicine at the Royal Medical School in Lisbon. After graduating, he went to Germany to train as an ophthalmologist under Otto Becker at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . There he was appointed private lecturer and later professor .

In 1885 he returned to Lisbon and three years later founded the Instituto de Oftamologia , which was the country's first training center for ophthalmologists. It bears his name today.
