Otto Heinrich Enoch Becker (born May 3, 1828 in Domhof Ratzeburg , † February 7, 1890 in Heidelberg ) was a German ophthalmologist and university professor.

Otto Becker was one of nine children of the vice-principal and later the last rector of the Ratzeburg Cathedral School Ulrich Justus Hermann Becker and his wife Mathilde, nee. Hufeland, a daughter of Gottlieb Hufeland . After attending the cathedral school he studied theology and philology at the University of Erlangen in 1847 , mathematics and natural sciences in Berlin from 1848–51, then went to Vienna as court master , studied human medicine at the University of Vienna from 1854–59 . His teachers included Karl von Graefe and Ferdinand von Arlt . During his studies in Erlangen he became a member of the Bubenreuther fraternity in the winter semester of 1847/48 . In 1859 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. In 1868 he was appointed full professor of ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg , where he remained until the end of his life.

Becker was one of the more important representatives of his field during the second half of the 19th century . José Rizal was one of his students . In 1887 he founded the Von Graefe Museum at Heidelberg University in memory of Albrecht von Graefe (1828–1870).

A plaque commemorates him on his parents' house in Ratzeburg, the former director's house at Domhof 40.

family

Becker married Helene Figdor (1840–1890), a sister of the banker and art collector Albert Figdor (1843–1927) , on February 2, 1864 in Vienna . Her father was the Viennese merchant Ferdinand Figdor (1805–1876), an uncle of the violinist Joseph Joachim .
