Jewish community of Merano

The Jewish Community of Merano has around 50 registered members. The religious community based in Merano in South Tyrol is one of the smallest Jewish communities .

history

The historical traces go back to the 13th century, but it was not until the 1830s that Jewish merchants settled permanently in Merano. In 1901 the Merano synagogue was built with the help of the Königswarter Foundation. A cultural cooperation was formed in Merano at the end of the 19th century, and in 1921 the religious community was officially founded.

After the German occupation of South Tyrol in 1943, all Jews still living in Merano were arrested with the help of the South Tyrolean security service and later deported. In the Jewish cemetery of Merano, a plaque commemorating the Holocaust victims.
