List of stumbling blocks in Merano
The list of stumbling blocks in Merano contains all the stumbling blocks that were laid by Gunter Demnig on May 19 and 20, 2012 in Merano as part of the art project of the same name . They are dedicated to the victims of National Socialism based in Merano . Most of the stumbling blocks are dedicated to the Jews who were deported and murdered in September 1943.
background
After Mussolini's fall on July 25, 1943, German troops marched into Northern Italy on August 1 . On September 8th, after the announcement of the armistice signed by the Badoglio government with the Allies , the Germans began disarming the Italian armed forces in South Tyrol and de facto took over power in the country. Two days later, the foothills of the Alps operations zone , to which South Tyrol also belonged, was established. On September 12, the SS and Police Leader of the Operation Zone SS Brigadefuehrer Karl Brunner issued the order to arrest all full Jews living in South Tyrol . On the night of September 15-16, 1943, the first raids and arrests took place in Merano . They were led by SS-Untersturmführer and head of the SD in Meran Heinrich Andergassen and SS-Obersturmführer Alois Schintlholzer . The Germans were supported by the South Tyrolean security service .
The 25 people arrested on September 16, 1943 were locked up in the basement of what was then the Balilla House (demolished in the 1960s, today Otto-Huber-Straße 36) and transported from there by truck to the Reichenau camp the next day , which started the deportation of Jews by the National Socialists in Italy . They stayed there for about six months, four of whom died in Reichenau. At the beginning of March 1944, the rest were finally deported to Auschwitz . Only one of those abducted at the time, Valeska von Hoffmann, survived the Holocaust .
To commemorate the murdered, Gunter Demnig laid 33 stumbling blocks , cubic concrete cubes with an engraved brass plate, in front of the former homes of the victims in Merano in May 2012 . He was supported by the Jewish community of Merano and by students from the State Vocational School for the Hospitality Industry in Savoy, the Gymme Merano, the Italian secondary school in Merano and the ITAS Bolzano.
