Jewish cemetery (Bauerbach)
The Jewish cemetery Bauerbach is located in the Thuringian town of Bauerbach , a district of the Grabfeld community .
history
In the 17th / 18th In the 19th century, a Jewish community emerged in Bauerbach . In 1811 the religious community had 91 members in 18 families, in 1852 there were 126 Jews in the village, in 1913 there were 25 and in 1933 there were still 13 people in four families.
The year the Jewish cemetery was built is unknown. The oldest grave inscription dates from 1722. The cemetery was used by the Jewish communities from Bauerbach, Bibra and Mühlfeld .
Location and characterization
The cemetery is located southeast of Bauerbach on the Krackenwand on a hill in the forest. It is one of the largest country cemeteries in Thuringia. On an area of 37 ares there are still 365 tombstones ( Mazewa ). The oldest part is at the front and has tombstones that are only labeled in Hebrew . The rear section of the cemetery in a clearing is more recent and also has tombstones that are inscribed in Hebrew on the obverse and in German on the reverse.
