The Bergheim Jewish Cemetery is located in the city center of the district town of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

There was already a Jewish community in Bergheim in the Middle Ages . It was destroyed during the Jewish pogrom in 1349. In the early modern period, Jewish citizens can be found in Bergheim again since 1637. Since there was a synagogue in Bergheim as early as the 17th century , the place should have had a Jewish cemetery even then . According to earlier Jewish custom, the deceased were buried outside the city walls. That is why the old cemetery was on Knüchelsdamm. This cemetery existed until around 1862. It was replaced by the new cemetery on Bethlehemer Strasse in Bergheim. The last burial took place here in 1933. Although the cemetery had to be sold to the city of Bergheim in 1940, it hasSurvived the time of National Socialism . In 1953 it was handed over to the Cologne synagogue community .

Current condition

52 tombstones ( mazewot ) still exist in the Jewish cemetery today . The burial place is at the corner of Bethlehemer Str./Schützenstr. behind a tall brick wall. The gate is locked with a chain. The cemetery was entered on the list of monuments of the city of Bergheim on July 14, 1989. The cemetery is only open to the public as part of city tours.
