history

News about a Jewish community in Wesseling has been passed down continuously since the 18th century. The Hersel Synagogue Association was founded in the Napoleonic period, encompassing the Jews in Hersel, Widdig , Rheindorf and Wesseling. In 1855 the synagogue community Wesseling was constituted with the communities Wesseling, Hersel and Bornheim. In 1930 Hersel and Wesseling separated from Bornheim. In 1932, Hersel and Widdig were affiliated.

The size of the community was 63 members in 1806 (Mayor of Hersel, including Wesseling), 92 in 1885 and 61 in 1932. In 1822 (according to other sources in 1850) a synagogue was built, which was destroyed in 1938.

The Jewish cemetery , which was occupied from before 1783 to 1940, still has 81 tombstones ( Mazewot ). The cemetery was expanded in 1862. After 1945, the then municipality of Wesseling put up a memorial stone . In the 1950s the cemetery was desecrated.

The cemetery is registered as monument number 9 in the Wesseling monument list.
