Jewish cemetery in Halle (Saale) on Humboldtstrasse

The Jewish cemetery in Halle (Saale) is located on Humboldtstrasse and was inaugurated in 1869. It was a replacement for the first cemetery of the Jewish community, which was laid out in 1693 on the pottery plan near the Stadtgottesacker , after it was re-established in Halle in the 17th century. The new cemetery covers an area of just under one hectare on which several hundred tombs stand. Funerals took place until 1929, in family graves until 1940. Since then, members of the Jewish community have been buried in the New Jewish Cemetery , a separate area from the Gertraudenfriedhof .

The mourning hall , built in 1894, has been used as the synagogue of the Halle community since the end of the Second World War , as the inner-city synagogue could no longer be rebuilt after the destruction of National Socialism and the later conversion of the site.

During the attack on the Halle synagogue on October 9, 2019, incendiary devices were thrown at the adjacent Jewish cemetery.
