The Šnipiškės Jewish Cemetery is the oldest and largest Jewish cemetery in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius . It was destroyed in the Soviet era .

history

In Šnipiškės ( Piramónt ) there was the Šnipiškės synagogue . The cemetery was established in the 15th century in what is now the center of Vilnius on the opposite bank of the Neris River . In 1817 the Russian tsarist administration planned to close the cemetery. It wasn't closed until 1831.

From 1949 to 1950 the cemetery was destroyed by the Soviets for the construction of the Žalgiris Stadium . ... the centuries-old Jewish cemetery [was] rolled flat. His tombstones were used for the construction of parks and public buildings. Those who bend down frequently today and look very closely will still be able to see the outlines of Hebrew letters even on the sidewalks of the city.

In 1971, the Soviet Sports Palace Vilnius was built in the middle of the former cemetery.

Since April 8, 2008, the site of the cemetery has been protected by the state as a monument.

In 2017 the petition for the preservation and perpetuation of Rūta Bloštein was called.
