Jewish cemetery (Guben)
The Jewish cemetery in Guben , a town in Lower Lusatia in Brandenburg , was established in 1839 on the area of the then village of Reichenbach, outside the town of Guben. The approximately 40 ares large Jewish cemetery at Cottbuser Strasse 54b is a protected monument .
The oldest surviving tombstone is from 1856. In 1938 the cemetery was desecrated and temporarily destroyed. Today over 100 tombstones are still preserved.
After 1945, the then Protestant superintendent arranged for the cemetery to be transferred back to the Association of Jewish Communities.
Mourning hall
In 1911 the funeral hall with an apartment for the cemetery attendant was built.
A contract was signed between the Association of Jewish Congregations and the Protestant Church Community, according to which the mourning hall is used by the Protestant church community and the cemetery is maintained by them. In 1951 the first service took place in the former Jewish mourning hall, which has since been called the Reichenbach mountain chapel . The former apartment of the cemetery attendant serves as the apartment of the Protestant pastor.
