The Schleusingen Jewish Cemetery is located in the Thuringian town of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district .

history

In 1704 Jews were allowed to settle in Schleusingen. In 1828 the place had 39 Jewish inhabitants, in 1871 there were 89 community members and in 1932 there were 31 people. The last Jewish residents were deported in 1942 . The community laid out the Jewish cemetery in 1710. The cemetery was desecrated several times, badly damaged during the National Socialist era and partially restored after 1945. The last funeral took place in 1937 with Nathan Frankenberg, who died at the age of 49 after being tortured in Schleusinger prison.

Location and characterization

The cemetery is located about one kilometer north of Schleusingen city center in the Flur Im Judengrund on the Am Sättel street that leads to St. Kilian . On an area of ​​13 ares there are still 108 tombstones ( Mazewa ), which are in two fields. In the northern part are the older tombstones, some of them date from the first third of the 19th century, in the southern part are the youngest.
