Jewish cemetery (Weitersroda)
The Weitersroda Jewish cemetery is located in Weitersroda , Thuringia , a district of Hildburghausen .
history
Jewish residents have been recorded for Hildburghausen since 1331. Nothing is known about a permanent expulsion from Hildburghausen. In 1726 there were twelve Jewish families in the city. By 1796 the number grew to 22 families, which included 128 people. In 1898 there were 114 Jewish residents and in 1933 there were around 50 people. A Jewish community existed until 1938.
A Jewish cemetery was allowed to be set up in 1680 in the area of the old zoo in the Weitersroda district. In 1720 it became the property of the Hildburghausen Jewish community. Extensions followed in 1720 and 1806 and a Tahara house was built in 1900 . The catchment area of the burial ground included the Jewish communities in Hildburghausen and until 1885 Simmershausen , who then used the cemetery in Gleicherwiesen . 554 burials, 318 adults, 202 children and 34 premature and stillborns were carried out. The last burial was in 1941. In 1991 the cemetery was desecrated.
Location and characterization
The burial site is east of Hildburghausen, about 300 meters before the start of Weitersroda. On an area of 19.44 ares there are 246 grave sites with 233 tombstones ( Mazewa ), which are in two fields. In the eastern part are the older tombstones, the oldest dating from 1680 to 1722. In the western part of the Tahara Hall are the youngest, mainly from the 19th century.
Tahara house
At the entrance is the large Tahara house . The building has three separate rooms for dressing, washing the corpse and celebrating. The square complex is bordered by a wooden fence and is a listed building .
