history

This cemetery is occupied from 1796 until today. It has been the official Jewish cemetery in Bremen since 1803.

During the November pogroms 1938 on the night of November 9th to 10th, the Jewish cemetery was devastated; many graves were desecrated. The first destruction was cleared immediately after the end of the war. In 1952 the mourning hall was rebuilt and inaugurated; a memorial for the victims of the Jewish community was unveiled. The cemetery has been a listed building since 1978 .

On August 3, 2010, the cemetery was desecrated by unknown perpetrators. 12 tombstones were knocked over. Jens Böhrnsen, Mayor of Bremen at the time, said: "I am always shocked that there are idiots who have learned nothing and who want to provoke with such deeds."

There has been a second Jewish cemetery in Bremen since 2008: The Riensberg Jewish cemetery is located directly next to the Riensberg cemetery in the Schwachhausen district of Bremen .
