Synagogue (Bremen)
The only synagogue in the city of Bremen is located in the Schwachhausen district on the south side of the street at Schwachhauser Heerstraße 117. The former synagogue on Kolpingstraße (formerly Gartenstraße 6) was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .

In the post-war years, a Jewish retirement home in the Gröpelingen district served as a temporary solution. At the end of the 1950s, the desire for a new place of worship arose in the Jewish community. Planning began in 1959. In 1961, the proposal by the architect Karl Gerle from Recklinghausen was implemented . The city of Bremen transferred the property on Schwachhauser Heerstraße to the Jewish community - partly in exchange for land ceded by the community. The Bremen Senate provided the construction costs of 1,300,000 German marks from a fund to redress National Socialist injustice.
On August 30, 1961, the community center was inaugurated. The synagogue and the adjoining community center have a prayer hall, a club room, an inner courtyard, a library, teaching and office rooms, a ritual bath and meeting rooms . A Jewish kindergarten is also connected. The dome of the synagogue has a diameter of 14.38 meters. Inside, the prayer room, which, like the entire building, is very modern in design, can accommodate around 120 people. Since this is a relatively conservative community, men and women sit separately: while 70 men can sit in the main level area in front of the Torah shrine , there is a gallery for around 50 women with a railing made of frosted glass. A very thin curtain about 50 centimeters high is attached to the railing.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union , many new parishioners have immigrated from the former Soviet Union . An integration office was set up for this purpose. The building was rebuilt in the 1990s and expanded with a ballroom.
